SINGING Babs is a better singer than Celine. They are both great singers and the duet 'Tell Me' is fabulous and they both have a great vocal range. All the same, Babs has the edge for me - by quite a wide margin too - because she is more nuanced in her singing. Every note counts; it doesn't matter whether she sings soft or mid-range or belts her voice out: soft, low, mid, high, it doesn't matter - none of sounds staid, boring, lazy, or less great if head not diaphram etc. . Every note, every word sounds as good as the next throughout the entire song, so she holds my interest throughout the entire song. She makes the song what it is. With Celine, it is different. I find myself impatiently waiting for the powerful lung-belting bits where she really comes into her own. Her mid and soft sound singing lacks the Streisand magic for me. For Celine the song is what mattes most to bring out the best in her singing style (Titanic song being the best); with Babs she makes any song - even ba, ba black sheep - sound heaven sent. Babs can make a silk purse from a sow's ear if she has to; I don't think Celine can. If the song is not great, nor is she. VOICE It must be said though that Bab's vocal sound - her voice - is so unique, it is probably easier to dislike than Celine's voice which is far more likeable and accessible, which may explain her popularity and record sales, which I believe far exceeds Barbra's. (But there again, Barbra has diversified far more than Celine has - with acting, producing, writing and so on - so record sales and personal wealth are not a good measure of telling who is the better vocalist of the two). I love Babs' voice, personally. CONCLUSION That's the difference between them: the songs is what makes Celine shine - she is someone who needs a great power ballad to make the most of her talent; whereas Babs makes the song what it is-Her voice and singing are musical poetry. Together and individually, they are both brilliant at what they do. ---- Other singers: Whitney Houston - she is just Celine only more wooden. Can't stand her. Mariah - only sounds great because every note is bent and distorted beyond recognition with all of that warbling and wailing. Arethra Franklin - still the best singer of all time. NO one touches her. In fact, I think the very best classically untrained female singers of all time are black. Other greats are Shirley Bassey, Minnie Ripperton....oh I could go on. Too many to mention. But undoubtedly Babs (and Celine) are pretty much the cream of the white crop of all time greats.

Celine is literally the only white woman who could convincingly pull off reggae.
